【英語】 Tokoroten : 暑い夏には、さっぱりとした「ところてん」で健康的に！
“Tokoroten” has been enjoyed in Japan for more than a thousand years. Traditionally, it has been one of the typical cold snack in summer.
It is a jelly-like food made from red seaweed called “Tengusa” (天草, Gelidium).
Using a special wooden “Tokoroten”-making instrument, which works like a handy pump, gelatin seaweed substance is pushed out from small holes and made into thin noodle-like strips, as seen in the picture. Please find the noodle-like strips coming out of “Tentsuki”, the “Tokoroten” making instrument, in the 2nd picture below.
“Tokoroten” is served cold and typically with vinegar flavored soy sauce, or with sugar syrup in some cases.
It is very healthy, with high vegetable protein but extremely low calories. Good for dieting!
